A Few New Music Room Purchases (So It Can Be Finished Sooner Than Later)
- Details

We’re finally thawed out here in central Texas, and back to our regular weather with sunshine and temps in the 70s. But during the ten days of Snowmageddon 2021, when I had zero desire to do much of anything except stay bundled under my down comforter and drink hot chocolate, I also spent quite a bit of time looking back over old pictures of the house. It was fun to see just how far I’ve come on so much of the house. While I was looking through those old pictures, I also came across this color-coded floor plan that I did almost exactly two years ago, showing the areas that were finished, those that would be finished that year (2019), those that were in progress with the contractor, etc. Sadly, two years later, none of those three areas that were slated to be finished in 2019 are finished yet. So I decided to do a new color-coded floor plan to see where things stand almost exactly two years later. Here’s what I have… You can see that there was one area that went backwards. The hallway was in the “finished” category in 2019, and now two years later, it’s back […]

Considering IKEA Pax Wardrobes For My Studio Storage
- Details

Well, y’all. I thought that my living room was just about finished, and that I’d have lots of before and after pictures to show y’all this week. But then I went and rearranged the furniture and decided that the room still needed one last something. So I placed an order yesterday for that one last item that should be here on the 25th. Ugh. I did go ahead and paint my door, in case you were wondering. It’s teal now. But I’ll wait to show you that when the room is finished and I get my final pictures. In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about my studio, and the fact that the cabinets in there are such a huge project that I absolutely dread. So I got online last night and was looking at random things on Pinterest, and I have no idea how or why, but I came across pictures of closets that had IKEA Pax wardrobes in them that had been completely customized to look like custom built-ins. I’m sure you’ve seen one of these closets before. The wardrobes themselves are pretty simple and basic, but once you add trim, custom drawer fronts, crown molding, etc., they look […]

I Can’t Decide On A Front Door (Interior) Color — Three Options
- Details

I always wanted to have a house where you walk into an actual entryway before entering into the main room(s) of the house. That way the entryway is pretty much its own room, and it can be decorated on its own. One of the features I like the least about our house is that the front door is right smack dab inside the front living room. I’ve tried several things over the years to kind of separate this area from the main seating area of the living room. I’ve tried creating an entryway using furniture placement, using a feature wall, etc. But I still feel like there are limitations. If my front door were inside an actual separate entryway, my paint color options for the interior of the front door would be much wider. But with the front door in the living room, no matter how I try to separate the area and visually create the feel of an entryway, it’s still right there in the living room. Anyway, I have so few things left to do in the living room before I consider the room finished, and one of them is painting the inside of the front door. It […]

My New Amazing Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner (An Unsolicited Review)
- Details

I mentioned a few weeks back that I was considering purchasing a carpet and upholstery cleaner, and at the time, I had narrowed it down to two. Well, after reading probably 150+ customer reviews and comparing features, I made my decision, and finally went with this one… This was not given to me by the company, and no one asked me to write a review of this product. I went to Lowe’s and purchased my new carpet and upholstery cleaner just like anyone else would have to, and I ended up loving it so much that I wanted to tell y’all about it. While I did buy mine locally at Lowe’s for $279 (because I like immediate gratification), it’s actually $30 cheaper on Amazon. You can click here to find it on Amazon. I don’t have any carpet in my house, and to date, I only have one area rug. But I wanted a cleaner not only for the rug, but also for the upholstery, because it’s just a handy thing to have when you have pets in the house. Our dog Cooper spends lots of time outside when the weather is nice, and since we still don’t have any […]

Living Room Progress – Floral Pillows (How To Sew A Pillow Cover With Zipper)
- Details

I have finally added some of my beautiful floral fabric to the living room. The fabric is by P. Kaufman, and it’s called Paint Palette. It comes in at least three colorways, and this one is called Punch. I had originally intended to upholster the backs of two chairs with this fabric, but as my plans for the living room evolved, and I ended up purchasing two new purple chairs, I had to come up with a new plan for the fabric. So I used it to make two pillows to go in the purple chairs. I made these with zippers on the bottom so that they can be removed and washed. So for those of you who have never sewn a pillow cover with a zipper, I thought I’d show you the process so you can see just how easy it is. Quite honestly, I find sewing zippered pillow covers to be easier than permanent, non-zippered covers. With the covers that are sewn on all four sides to create a permanent cover on the pillow, you either have to sew the fourth side by hand, which takes much longer than sewing a zipper in, or you have to wrangle […]

Our Living Room Fireplace Through The Years — From The Beginning To Present
- Details

If you’re new here, and you haven’t taken a close look at our living room fireplace, you may not realize that the fireplace is fake with an electric insert. From the first moment I saw this room before we bought the house, I knew I wanted a fireplace in the room. And I also knew that it didn’t need to be real. I just wanted the pretty architectural detail of a fireplace. So a few months after buying the house, I built a fake fireplace to go in the room. But if you compare how it looked originally to how it looks now, it almost looks like a completely different fireplace…and a completely different room. I had forgotten just how drastically it had changed until I was looking through some old pictures last night, so I thought it would be fun to take a walk down memory lane and remember just how far this fireplace has come. But let’s start with the prettiest view, which is the current view. Here’s how it looks as of this morning. I still need to decide exactly what I want to display on the mantel. That vase is a temporary place holder. So if […]

Living Room Update – No More Puddled Curtains
- Details

I’ve decided that I’m going to go ahead and finish my living room before jumping into the much more extensive hallway and home gym projects. The living room is so close to being finished that it’s ridiculous to keep ignoring it and putting it off. The first thing on my list of finishing touches for the living room was the curtains. You might remember that I broke all of my own rules with these curtains. My rules are (1) always use appropriate home decor fabric (never use apparel fabric for curtains), (2) always use drapery lining, and (3) always sew them properly with blind hems and hidden stitching. Well, when I found this beautiful pink stretchy polyester suiting fabric, all of my rules went out the window and I was determined to make it work. I didn’t line them because sewing lining to a stretchy fabric seemed like a really bad idea to me. And I didn’t use blind stitching because doing that on stretchy fabric was a real nightmare. But when I originally made them, I also didn’t hem them because I was unsure how the stretch of the fabric would affect how the panels hang over time. So […]

Two Wall Design Patterns (Free Downloads) — Guest Bedroom Flowers and Original Entryway Branches & Birds
- Details

Did you see my guest bedroom before and after post? Most people who saw the finished room, and who hadn’t been following along on this project over the last year, assumed that the wall was covered in wallpaper. But that’s actually a hand-drawn design. I’ve done two hand-drawn wall mural designs in this house, and on both of them, I collaborated with my very artistic mom. The hardest part is coming up with the design, so we put our creativity together to come up with ideas and arrangements. But once it’s on paper and can be scanned and printed out onto a transparency, the rest is really very simple and relatively fast (as in, way faster than stenciling, at least for me). And even if you have to buy an overhead projector (mine was about $50 on Ebay), it’ll still cost hundreds of dollars less than wallpaper would cost. So, good news! If you want this design on your wall, my mom and I have done the hard part for you. 😀 All you have to do is print it out on a transparency, get yourself an overhead projector, and then start tracing. And tracing. And tracing some more. This […]

Guest Bedroom – Finished! (Before & After)
- Details

I finally have pictures of the finished guest bedroom! This room was in progress for over a year, which was way too long. But considering that the year was 2020…well, a year-long bedroom remodel seems fitting. Anyway, here’s how it turned out… This is not a huge bedroom, but there were some pretty extensive projects that went into it. Here’s how the room looked when we bought the house in 2013… You can see that it had teal carpet (which was a departure from the green carpet in the rest of the house). It also had a door leading out to the front porch, and a window on the wall opposite the door. We lived with that window unit air conditioner in this room long after we had our HVAC system installed because that window had been painted in that open position and wouldn’t close. So when I finally decided exactly how I wanted to use this room, and came up with the layout I wanted, both the door and the opposing window had to go. I didn’t do that part by myself. I decided a while back that I’ve paid my drywall dues, and I’ll never drywall another room […]

A New Year, A New Strategy
- Details

Remember when I said I was ready to hit the ground running in this new year? Well, evidently what I meant was that I was ready to hit the ground with a slow, leisurely stroll during which I’d stop at every available park bench for a rest. 😀 It would appear that during the last crazy year, I’ve forgotten how to work. 😀 I’ll try harder. I promise. And I do expect that my slow, leisurely stroll will gradually increase to a brisk walk, and possibly even a casual jog at some point. I can make no promises beyond that. 😀 But what I can guarantee you is that as long as I have projects to do in our house, I’ll continue sharing them here. Several times last week, I sat down to do my annual “Master List of Home Goals” for 2021. But after last year, and failing so miserably at making any real progress on my list or on the house, I decided to forgo the long, exhaustive list this year. That doesn’t mean I don’t have goals for the year. I’m just not going to make long, detailed, exhaustive, bulleted lists of every project that needs to […]

2020 Year In Review
- Details

I think it goes without saying that 2020 didn’t work out quite like I had planned. I’m pretty sure most of us could say that. I started out the year with all kinds of projects planned for the year (you can see my 2020 Master List of Home Goals here), and when all was said and done, I only managed to get a tiny fraction of things on that list started, with even fewer of them actually finished. I also added a pretty significant weeks-long project that I hadn’t planned on doing at the beginning of the year — my mom’s kitchen makeover. So really, I got more done that my original list would indicate. But overall, I’d say that 2020 was my least productive year since I started blogging about my DIY projects. That’s okay. It was a strange and hard year, and I’ll cut myself some slack. So here’s a quick review of what I actually did get done this last year. Music Room First, I painted the bookcases and doors in the music room. The bookcases were white and the doors were black… And I both the bookcases and doors in the music room the same dark […]

A Sad Goodbye And A Good Riddance To 2020
- Details

Happy New Year, y’all! We made it. 2020 is officially in our rear view mirror, and I couldn’t be happier about that. But that dreadful year couldn’t just go quietly at the end. It took my grandmother — my last remaining grandparent — with it. I’ve mentioned her several times before in previous posts, so those of you who have been around for a while may remember me writing about her. Her grandchildren called her Mernie. She was an amazing woman, a force of nature, and a huge influence on my life. This was her on her 104th birthday. Mernie was born in 1912, and died last Tuesday, December 29, at the age of 108. It’s hard to even imagine everything she saw and experienced over her 108 years, having been born before indoor plumbing was common and outhouses were the norm, and before cars were common, and before most houses had electricity and were still being lighted with kerosene lamps and heated with wood stoves. She had such amazing and funny stories to tell of her childhood, dating my grandfather, and life in general over her 108 years. People often ask me how I got into building and DIY […]

The Clouds Have Parted, The Sunlight Is Back
- Details

Good morning, all! I’m still working towards my goal of getting my house all clean and ready to go for the new year, and things are moving along pretty well now. I started off the week still dragging my feet and working pretty slowly and reluctantly just because the task at hand seemed so huge. But yesterday I started to see some major progress, and that got me excited and motivated to work even harder and faster to get it all done. I won’t show you how my house started off, because while I try to be pretty open and transparent, I’m not willing to open myself up to that level of ridicule. 😀 Just suffice it to say that over the last few months, the condition of my house became worse than it has ever been. I’m the only person in this house who has the ability to pick up, clean, and organize. So when I pretty much stopped doing those things, there was no one else to pick up the slack until I got my act together again. So while I won’t show you all of the mess, I’ll give you a glimpse into the kind of craziness […]

A Few Steps Forward
- Details

This week hasn’t been quite as productive as I had hoped, but the good news is that I’m actually starting to feel excited about house-related stuff again! I had my consultation for my tooth (I have to get a dental implant, in case you missed that) on Tuesday. I so appreciate all of your comments sharing your own experiences! I’ve never had this done before, so I was expecting it to be similar to having my wisdom teeth out. But by the time I had my appointment, I had already read many of your comments telling me that this will be much easier than having wisdom teeth out, so I was feeling pretty calm by the time I arrived for my appointment. I go back for the actual procedure on December 22nd, and I’m not feeling the least bit anxious about it anymore. So thank you! Reading about your experiences really helped me know what to expect, and to feel pretty calm about the whole thing. Anyway, Wednesdays are Lunch On The Patio with my mom, brother, and sister. We’ve been doing this every Wednesday for about a year-and-a-half. Everyone brings their own steaks, I grill them, and then we […]

One More Month
- Details

Okay, y’all. I’m back. I didn’t quite mean to be gone that long, but I just needed to check out for a while. Are any of you feeling like 2020 has been using us as punching bag? That’s kind of how I feel. And then when our precious Peeve (our 17-year-old calico) died, that was the final gut punch to finish me off. Matt didn’t handle it so well, either. And when he has some sort of emotional trauma, it affects him a thousand times more than it does us relatively healthy, able-bodied people. M.S. is a strange thing like that. So when that happens to him, he requires much more of my time and attention. And to cap off this epically strange and horrible year, I learned that I have to have oral surgery to have a dental implant. A tooth with a decades-old root canal and filling gave way and cracked completely in two, so now I have to have it removed and replaced. What a perfect way to cap off this year, huh? But I’ve decided that as much as I’d love to completely check out and drown myself in sleep, food, and Hallmark movies for the […]

Heartbroken (R.I.P., Peeve)
- Details

Y’all, I’m absolutely heartbroken. Last Tuesday, Matt and I had to say goodbye to our precious 17-year-old calico, Peeve. She was a little 5-pound cat with a 1000-pound personality, and our home feels so empty without her. Matt and I got her on our one-year wedding anniversary during a weekend trip to the Oregon coat. We hadn’t planned on getting a cat, but as we walked around in that small coastal town, we spotted a pet store and stopped in. I’ve never been a “pet store” kind of person, but when I laid eyes on this tiny little calico cat, she stole my heart and I had to have her. They kept her for us until we were ready to head back home since we couldn’t keep her in the bed and breakfast where we were staying. So on our way out of town, we swung by and picked up our new kitten. And then she proceeded to SCREAM AT THE TOP OF HER LUNGS all the way home — for 90 straight minutes. 😀 Several times during that trip, I looked at Matt with these SCREAMING kitten on my shoulder and asked, “What the heck have we done? What […]

Lamp Makeover & Framed Wall-Mount TV Finishing Details
- Details

I’m almost at the finish line on this guest bedroom makeover, and I’m focusing on all of the final little finishing touches. I wanted a lamp to go on the dresser, but instead of buying a new one, I decided to use one I already had. It was a cute little lamp, and there was really nothing wrong with it at all. It just seemed a little dull for the room. So I jazzed it up with some new clean white and gold paint and golden yellow fabric for the lamp shade. I had originally purchased this lamp to use in the hallway bathroom, and I used it in there for quite a while. But then when I did the colorful makeover on that bathroom in 2019, it didn’t really go in there anymore, so it went into my stash of extra stuff. So I got it out to use in this room. Many time, I can just tape off different areas of a lamp to paint them. But since this one had that glass section with the interesting shape sitting on the metal base, I didn’t think I could tape it off good enough to get really sharp lines […]

I Think I May Have Been Crazy
- Details

I have one more main project to do before the guest bedroom is finished. I still have to sew the draperies. Other than that, it’s just a few touch ups, some accessorizing, and then it’s done! But this past weekend, I was at the point of the project where I was starting to feel like it’ll never be done. Honestly, I’ve been at that point for a couple of weeks now. And when I reach that point in a project, I start to question if I’m ever going to get this house done. And then I start to question what the heck I’ve even accomplished in the first place since we bought this house. Since I live in this house day after day, and I only experience the gradual changes each day, sometimes it’s hard to remember exactly what I started out with. So last night, I took a trip down memory lane to encourage myself, and remember exactly what this house looked like when we signed the papers and were handed the key. I’ll never forget walking through the house the first time with my mom. She looked at me with the most concerned look on her face and […]

DIY Framed Full Length Mirror
- Details

I crossed one more project off of the list for the guest bedroom. The full-length mirror is framed and ready to hang on the wall. I had mentioned the possibility of using yellow on the TV frame, but I decided to use it on this much thinner frame instead. I still need to hang the mirror, and to do that, I’ll use a Hangman mirror hanger. Those are the only things I’ll use to hang large and/or heavy items on my walls. But let’s get to the framing process. I started by cutting a piece of 1/2-inch plywood (that I already had on hand and has been stored outside, which is why it looks like it’s seen better days 😀 ) to the dimensions of my mirror, plus about 1/16th inch in both directions. Next, I used my table saw to cut some lumber to the thickness that I wanted for the frame. I started with a 1″ x 3″ piece of lumber, and cut it into pieces that are about 3/8″ x 1-1/4″. Using 1.5″ 18-gauge nails and wood glue, I attached those pieces to the edges of the plywood. You can see above that I did not miter […]

Easy DIY Acrylic Artwork (Guest Bedroom Progress)
- Details

I needed some artwork to go on the TV wall in the bedroom, so naturally, I made my own. I kept it super simple, and this is something almost anyone can do. This is the wall that needed the artwork… I didn’t want to take a lot of time or spend a lot of money on this, so I pretty much used what I had on hand, with the exception of one sample size of yellow paint. I already had four of my favorite white frames from Target on hand (you can find those frames here), so I decided to do four pieces of artwork so that I could hang two on each side of the TV. I didn’t even bother to do this artwork on separate sheets of art paper. The backs of the frames are very thick and smooth cardboard, so I just painted right on them! 😀 I started by brushing on a couple of coats of water-based primer… And then I brushed on two coats of my background color. I used the same paint that I used as the background on the feature wall. I brushed each coat in opposite directions, letting the first dry completely […]

One Closet Finished, One To Go
- Details

I finally started tackling the single remaining project I was dreading the most — finishing the interiors of the closets. I got one of them finished, and still have one to go. And while the project itself wasn’t that exciting, there’s something about finally being able to move my stuff into the room that takes it from being just a fun room to decorate to being an actual bedroom. If you’re new around here, let me explain. This bedroom is actually the guest bedroom. But for now, Matt and I will move in there and use it as our main bedroom until we are able to do the addition on the back of our house that will include a master suite, laundry/utility room, and family room. After closing off the original closet in this room and adding that space to the adjoining room (which will be our home gym eventually), I needed to carve out some space from the bedroom for new closets. I built two closets flanking the window. To save space, I used sliding doors instead of hinged doors. So the exteriors of the closets have been finished for a while, but the insides still needed attention. Here’s […]
